The Wire Fox Terrier and the Smooth Fox Terrier. The wire fox terrier is descended from the rough coated black and tan terrier and was used for hunting fox, while the smooth fox terrier is descended from the smooth coated black and tan terrier and was used as a fox and ratting dog. The wires coat is dense and wiry. The smooth's coat is straight and flat. Both breeds coat colors are mainly white, with black, black and tan, or tan markings.
